Orion was the demigod Son of Poseidon and the mortal princess Euryale. He was a gifted hunter and tracker who attracted the interest of Artemis for his skill and respect toward animal life and nature. She was so enamored with him that she made him the first man to be admitted into the Hunters of Artemis.
For a time, the two were happy simply hunting together. However, as they grew deeper in love, Artemis decided to renounce her vow of maidenhood and marry him. Unfortunately, her lieutenant at the time, Polyphonte, did not want this to occur. Instead, she secretly murdered Orion. Artemis, grief-stricken, swore that she would remain a maiden until Orion lived again as a result. He was turned into the constellation Orion to commemorate him.
