House Nymeros Martell is one of the nine Great Houses which rule Westeros. They are the Lords and Ladies Paramount of Dorne and rule from Sunspear.
Characteristics and Traits[]
The Martells are known for being rash and reckless. These members of the family are headstrong and quick to act. They also tend to be passionate and charismatic.
Alternatively, some Martells are known for being calm and patient. They are calculating and put-together, so much so that it is often easy to believe they are uncaring or weak.
Regardless, all members of House Martell are proud and strong
Customs[]
Unlike the other Great Houses, the Martells carry the title "Prince" or "Princess" of Dorne rather than lord or lady. This is in deference to their Rhoynar roots, where rulers were called such. As they came into the Seven Kingdoms through marriage rather than conquest, they were entitled to keep this ancient practice.
Furthermore, as one of their founders was Princess Nymeria of the Rhoynar, the Martells, and all of Dorne, practice blind primogeniture. The firstborn child of either gender inherits. This also entitles the women of Dorne to keep their surname if they are the heiress of their family.
History[]
When Aegon I Targaryen and his sister-wives began their conquest, Dorne resisted them. Princess Meria Martell, the ruling princess, refused to bend the knee. She then led her forces in a guerilla warfare style of combat against the encroaching armies until her death. One of the casualties was Queen Rhaenys Targaryen, Aegon I's sister-wife. Dorne was the only kingdom to repel the Targaryens.
Dancing Dragons[]
During Dancing Dragons, the greens ally with Dorne to have them attack Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen's forces. They were responsible for the death of Princess Elaena Targaryen during this conflict.
