Garnet Aimes is a merchant child from District 12 who is best friends and secretly in love with Peeta Mellark. Garnet's parents are jewelers and he regularly works in their shop. When Peeta was reaped for the Seventy-Fourth Hunger Games, Garnet stole a gold bangle from his parents' store for him to take as a token. Though typically they would be furious, they allowed it as they knew he had given it to a tribute.
When Peeta came out on national television, the highly conservative District Twelve realized that he was speaking of his love for Garnet. As such, when Garnet admitted that he was in love with Peeta as well, he was kicked out of his parents' home and forced to move into the Community Home. He has faced a lot of backlash from the people of District Twelve ever since.
After Peeta returned home, Garnet became a huge champion of the Community Home and the need to give back to it. He convinces Peeta, Haymitch Abernathy, and Beena Greene to try and improve the situation of the children there. Unlike Peeta and their friends, he has lived with the lowest of income people, the ones who don't have anything at all. So, he makes a point of trying to be independent of Peeta whenever he can be.
- In the earliest drafts of the story, he was known as "Nick". However, that name wasn't Panem enough, and so it was changed.
- After his parents kicked him out, he stopped going by "Garnet" and instead goes by "Gar" to distance himself from them.
