Gale Hawthorne is a seventeen-year-old resident of District Twelve and the longtime friend of Katniss Everdeen. Like Katniss, Gale is a hunter who ventures out past the fence of the district to hunt game to help feed his family. He briefly harbored romantic feelings for Katniss, but those quickly dissipated when he realized she was uninterested. Despite this, Katniss is his closest friend and he swore to take care of her family should she die in the arena.
